Sleuth Tips
Look for Clues
How do sleuths uncover clues from an author?
• Sleuths look for clues about sequence or how one
event caused another.
• Sleuths work while they read. They try to make the
clues fit together like a puzzle.
Ask Questions
Where do sleuths get answers to their questions?
• Sleuths find some answers in the words and pictures.
They also talk to other sleuths.
• Sleuths look for answers in other books or on
computers.
Make Your Case
How do sleuths use clues when they make a case?
• Sleuths tell what they think. They tell how the clues
led them to their answer.
• Sleuths tell where they found the clues. This can be
very useful.
Prove It!
Why do sleuths think about who will read what they
write?
• Sleuths know that one type of writing doesn’t work
for every reader.
• Sleuths write in the form that is needed. Sometimes
a sleuth writes a list. Sometimes a story or poem is
what is needed.
