James loved school. He loved reading and
writing. He loved playing soccer outside. But
sometimes James didn’t like math. Sometimes
adding and subtracting was hard.
“Come after school on Tuesday,” Ms. Garcia
said. “A student called a mentor will help you.”
On Tuesday, James worried about staying
after school. Who would his mentor be?
After school, James walked to Room 111.
He saw other first graders working quietly with
older students. A girl walked up.
“Hi, James,” she said. “I’m Maria, and
I’m in fifth grade. I’ll help you with math.”
They sat down, and James showed Maria
his math workbook. They talked
about each math problem.
Maria was very patient.
